How To Improve Your Memory With Stress Management

0

It is well known that leading a stressful life can have adverse effects, physically and mentally, on all of us. Unmanaged stress can result in hypertension, heart disease, strokes, peptic ulcer disease, anxiety, depression, relationships problems, weight gain, weight loss, increased risk of accidents, and many others complications.

It should not be surprising that stress can also adversely effect your memory. The new onset of a stressful situation results in an increase in your adrenaline, which can actually improve your memory by helping you focus on the issues involved. However, stress that goes unmanaged for a long period of time can result in difficulty focussing, memory loss and trouble thinking clearly. Your bodies cortisol levels increase during stressful events and this elevation is thought to possibly interfere with the memory process.

We all have experienced times when we felt stressed out and overwhelmed. You may have found it difficult to concentrate and had trouble remembering things as simple as where you placed your car keys.

It is imperative that you find some way to reduce or alleviate stress.

Exercise is the best way to alleviate physical and mental stress. Exercise increase the blood flow and oxygen supply to the brain. This improves the function of brain cells and helps in the repair and rebuilding of new brain cells. Exercise helps you relax and stimulates the release of endorphins which help with pain control.

Try not to isolate yourself from friends and family. Socializing will get you out of the house and help keep your brain active.

Try listening to music or an audio tape when you drive to help you relax and take your mind off of the issues that are creating your stress.

If your days are very regimented try breaking up the routine. Take a different route home or go out to eat with your family instead of dining in.

Try to take a break during the day and go outside. The fresh air and change in routine will help clear your thinking.

These are just a few ways you can take action to improve and preserve you memory function. Make time to implement strategies to alleviate mental and physical stress. This will keep your memory sharp and help you think more clearly during times when life seems overwhelming.
