Motivating others can be difficult, but it is not
impossible. With some people, it may also require a great
deal of patience. To get others motivated, you must first
be motivated yourself. You must be excited about what you
are trying to get them to do, and then share that
excitement with them.
If you feel genuinely passionate about something, people
will see it and it will be easier to get them motivated.
Sometimes, it may be necessary to offer some kind of
incentive. It doesn’t necessarily need to be something big,
just something that people will be excited about.
It is also very important that people know they have your
support and trust. If they know that you believe in them
and their ability, that can help them to feel more
motivated. Don’t just assume that they know you are
confident in their abilities, tell them. This will make
them feel good about themselves and help them to feel more
motivated.
Whether you are with a large company or a small group, let
people know that they are part of a team. Stressing
teamwork and the importance of everyone’s individual role
can help to motivate people. If they know that their part
is important to the end result they will feel more
motivated to do their part. Also, be sure that people know
what it is that you expect of them. If people are unsure
what their part is, they will feel frustrated and won’t be
motivated.
Many people want to know, ‘What’s in it for me?’ When
trying to motivate others, tell them what the benefits are.
It is easier for people to be excited and motivated to do
something if they don’t feel their time is being wasted.
They also need to feel appreciated. Everyone needs an
occasional ‘pat on the back’. It can really help to keep
people motivated.
