Stress is a routine part of the day, for most of us. The cause of the stress is not as
important as how we deal with it. If we easiy become worked up over small issues, we will find ourselves stressed out all the time.
We all need to have simple things we can do to intervene and diminish the affect each stressor has on us. It is not practical to think we can just run and hide or escape to a far away island.
We all have to deal with stress and a day probably doesn’t go by when you don’t feel
anxious, angry, annoyed, overworked, or just plain overwhelmed. That is why finding simple ways to relieve stress is so important.
The next time you face a stressful situation consider the following three simple tips:
1. Stop And Slowly Count To Ten -how you react to stress in your life is more important that the cause of the stress. If you react in an uncontrolled manner, every little issue will create stress in your day to day life. Take the time to stand back and evaluate the situation. Count to ten and rate the severity of the stressful event on a scale of 1-10. This will allow you to put the stressful situation in perspective.
What if your boss yelled at you? Well on a scale of 1-10 that is about a two as far as bad things that could happen to you. What if you lost your keys? That’s about a 4. It is not an ideal situation, but manageable. Counting to ten gives you time to really evaluate the stressful situation. Once you put things in perspective, you might find it’s not worth stressing over. Everyone is effected by stress differently, so evaluate it from your perspective.
2. Take Deep Breaths- stress is a response to something that we fear. Whenever we are afraid or in danger our breathing becomes quick and shallow. This also occurs when you are having a busy day and feel pressured. One thing that happens when you are afraid or in danger is your breathing becomes quick and shallow. The same thing can happen when you’re anxious about a busy day, nervous about giving a speech, or any other activity that makes you feel pressured. Concentrate on taking slow, deep breaths so that your stomach expands, then slowly letting the air out. This is a way of tricking your body into thinking the stressor is gone and will help in calming you.
3. Massage Your Temples- some people instinctively massage their temples when they are stressed. This is an acupressure technique that helps to relax tense muscles especially in the shoulder and neck area.
There are multiple ways to relieve stress. The aforementioned three tips will help you in relieving some of your stress no matter where you happen to be.
