Most of us have preconceived ideas of what might make us happy. However, we are frequently left feeling empty or unsatisfied once we achieve them. We tend to move on to pursuing the next big thing and never quite reaching a point of feeling content.
The following are 3 simple steps to achieving happiness now, even if everything in your life is not perfect.
1) Show Gratitude- being grateful for what you do have is a powerful state of mind. Focus more on what you do have instead of what is lacking in your life. You will discover a better sense of happiness when you spend your time thinking about the good things that are happening in your life (even small things), instead of dwelling on what you are lacking.
2) Smell The Roses- it is difficult to appreciate all the good things in life if you are busy living a stressful life full of rushing around and multitasking. To achieve true happiness you need to make time to relax, dream, and enjoy the simpler things in life. Beginning today, take the time to do the things you love even if you can only spare a few minutes. Try reading books that stimulate your imagination, listen to your favorite tunes, go for a walk, and just start enjoying the world around you.
3) Enjoy The Ride- many of us spend our lives pursuing that ultimate goal that we think will complete us and make our life perfect. There is no guarantee of health or that we will be here tomorrow. In the end the most valuable thing you can leave your family is the memory of the time you spent with them. It is great to have long term goals, but let your family and those you love come along to enjoy the journey.
We all have ups and downs in our life, but long term happiness is a choice. Instead of dwelling on the less desirable aspects of your life, use them as stepping stones to achieving a more happy, healthier life.
